STSA is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) to offer the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA) Research Grant. The STSA Research Grant will provide operational support of original research efforts by cardiothoracic surgeons who have completed their formal training and who are seeking initial support and recognition for their research program. An initial grant of up to $25,000 for one year will be awarded in 2016 to support the work of an early-career cardiothoracic surgeon (within seven years of first faculty appointment at time of application deadline). Applications are now being accepted at www.tsfre.org/awards. The deadline to apply is October 15, 2015.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Cardiothoracic surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or its equivalent in a country outside of the United States, or who will be certified by the grant start date.
- Cardiothoracic surgeons who currently practice or have previously practiced cardiothoracic surgery for at least one consecutive year, have completed a thoracic surgery or general surgery residency program, or have completed a thoracic or cardiovascular research or clinical fellowship for at least one consecutive year in one of the following states or regions: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, or the U.S. territories and commonwealths in the Caribbean.
- Note: STSA membership is not required.
STSA Research Grant applications will be reviewed by a Committee of STSA members who also serve on the TSFRE Research Committee. The 2016 STSA Research Grant recipient will be announced in January 2016.
STSA leadership believe that this Research Grant will allow STSA to further fulfill its mission of supporting southern and southern-trained members of the cardiothoracic surgery community while encouraging and stimulating progress in the fields of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
