STSA has updated and modernized this year’s Annual Meeting schedule to better meet the needs of attendees. STSA will continue to offer high-quality, informative education that you have come to expect, but with changes that will make your experience that much more enjoyable.

Claim STSA 64th Annual Meeting CME Credit

The Southern Thoracic Surgical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. STSA designates the 64th Annual Meeting for a maximum of 17 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Advance meeting registration is closed. Attendees will need to register onsite in San Antonio.

The deadline for all cancellation and refund requests is October 18, 2017. Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing by October 18 and are subject to a $50.00 cancellation fee. Unfortunately, STSA will not be able to honor any subsequent requests.


While the housing deadline has passed, a limited number of rooms are still available at the discounted STSA room rate, on a first-come-first-serve basis. Click here to reserve your room.

Getting Around San Antonio Hill Country

The San Antonio International Airport is located 20 miles from the hotel, and is served by most major airlines. A car would be needed if you wish to visit the nearby San Antonio area.

Airport Transportation
The resort does not provide shuttle service for the San Antonio International Airport (airport code SAT). There are several forms of ground transportation available at the airport.

Taxi Service
Taxis are available at the lower level curbside, outside of baggage claim. For assistance, please contact the Airport Ground Transportation Agent wearing an airport badge. Fares to the JW Marriot San Antonio are approximately $45.00 one way.

Shared or Private Car Service
The Airport Express Shuttle is located in the baggage claim area, lower level. To make transportation arrangements, proceed to the Airport Express Desk. Shuttles run every 15 to 25 minutes. The cost to the JW Marriott San Antonio is approximately $37.00 one way.

Car Rental
A special car rental rate has been negotiated for STSA meeting attendees through Hertz. For reservations in the U.S. and Canada call 800-654-2240; from all other locations call 405-749-4434. Reservations can also be made online at Reference CV# 04R50004 when making reservations.

The JW Marriott San Antonio offers complimentary self parking. Valet parking is $33.00 per day. Short-term valet parking (up to 9 hours) is $15.00.

Residents and medical students are encouraged to attend this function to meet other residents and students, and network with leaders in the field.

Gather with fellow meeting attendees for an evening of networking and fun. Attendees received 2 tickets with registration. Additional tickets may be purchased for $25.00.

Annual Awards Dinner
Friday, November 10
Reception: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Dinner: 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Cost: $100 per adult/ $40.00 per child (ages 12 and younger)

Advance registration recommended. A limited number of tickets will be sold on site.

Join fellow meeting attendees and their families for the always-memorable Awards Dinner, complete with a cocktail reception, dinner, awards and entertainment. We have shortened the award presentations to maximize the time to socialize and enjoy your friends at the STSA. Exciting entertainment with a local flare has been added to the year’s program. Don’t miss it!

Although black tie is always in fashion, you are welcome to wear cocktail attire. Be comfortable and have fun!

Golf at TPC San Antonio – A PGA Tour Experience

Time: Tee times begin at 1:00 pm
Cost: $175.00 (includes greens fees, golf cart and practice balls. Lunch is on own.)

A Peter Dye-crafted par-72 course sits on a great piece of land which provides panoramic views of an adjacent 700-acre nature preserve. The design, which measures more than 7,000 yards, is true to nature and to the flow of the land. The dramatic elevation changes and hill country views make this course not only challenging, but breathtaking as well.

Individual Golf Play
Cost: $175.00 (includes greens fees, cart fees and practice balls.

TPC San Antonio offers two championship golf courses that have hosted several PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions events, and is home to several PGA TOUR pros. If you’re unable to participate in the STSA Golf Outing but wish to take advantage of championship courses during your stay, contact the TPC clubhouse at 210-491-5800 to reserve a time according to your schedule. Be sure to mention you’re an STSA Annual Meeting attendee to receive the group discount of $175.00. (Individual tee times must be booked within 60 days of your intended day of play to qualify for the group discount.)

Rental clubs are available for $45.00, and soft-spike golf shoes may be rented for $15.00. Rental items are not included in the costs noted above.

Please note the following dress code: Men must wear collared shirts with long pants or Bermuda length shorts. Ladies must have a collar or sleeves on their top. Dresses, shorts or skirts of appropriate length are allowed. Only soft-spiked shoes are allowed on the course.

Onsite Fitness and Recreation

Lantana Spa & Fitness Center
STSA guests are eligible for a 15% discount on spa treatments at the JW Marriott’s own Lantana Spa. The on site spa boasts 30 treatment rooms, three relaxation lounges, outdoor adults-only spa pool and whirlpool, aromatherapy steam rooms, saunas, luxurious locker rooms, and a state-of-the-art fitness center (available to all resort guests), featuring a variety of fitness classes. To schedule discounted spa treatments, all the spa directly at 210-276-2300 and mention STSA. Visit to browse the treatment options.

Resort guests are not scheduled to receive spa treatments may request a day pass. Lantana Spa offers a limited number of day passes for $15, on a first-come, first-served basis. It is recommended that guests call when the spa opens at 7:00 am to secure a day pass.  A day pass is not required to use the fitness center.

River Bluff Water Experience
Surrounded by 600 acres of picturesque rolling oak-covered hills, the JW Marriott’s 9-acre water park, River Bluff Water Experience offers fun for all ages. Make memories with your family as you splash down rapid river rides, exciting slides and a 1,100-foot lazy river. The River Bluff Water Experience is complimentary for all hotel guests.

Children’s Activities
The Range Riders Kids Club invites children ages 4 to 12 to experience a fun-filled day of supervised entertainment, such as stimulating arts and crafts, water activities, and exciting games. Range Riders is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and costs $15 per child, per hour. The Range Riders Kids Club is conveniently located at the River Ben Pavilion, within River Bluff Water Experience. Advance registration is not required.

In addition, a full schedule of family-friendly activities offered by the resort will be provided upon arrival. Activities include animal encounters, cookie decorating, jumbo backyard games, dreamcatcher making, rubber duck racing, painting, magic shows, and more. Costs range from complimentary to $65 per person. Advance registration is not required.

  • The meeting will kick off bright and early on Thursday, Nov. 9 with the Basic Science Forum and Ethics Debate held concurrently from 7:00 am – 7:50 am.
    • The Basic Science Forum will include six abstract presentations addressing current and relevant topics, with discussion time allotted for each presentation.
    • The Ethics Debate will tackle the question, “Battling the Chimera: How Much Disclosure of Rare Risks Is Necessary?”
  • Scientific Sessions on Thursday and Friday will include abstracts and videos selected by the Program Committee after an intensive peer-review process. Many presentations will include a discussion period. In all, more than 70 abstracts and videos will be presented.
  • Concurrent subspecialty breakouts will be held on Friday, Nov. 10. This year’s breakout topics include Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic, Congenital, Transplant, and ECMO.
  • A new and exciting Legends Panel has been added to this year’s schedule on Friday, Nov. 10 from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm. This innovative session will have top surgeons addressing important topics in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • The Postgraduate Program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 8:00 am-11:40 am and will address a variety of noteworthy topics, including “Maximizing Leadership Potential in Your Practice,” “Advances in Surgery: New Techniques and Technologies,” and “Management of the Difficult Cardiothoracic Patient in the Early Postoperative Period” specifically for interdisciplinary care providers.
Guest Speakers/Business Meeting
  • The President’s Invited Lecturer, Dr. Pedro del Nido, and the Presidential Address by Dr. David Jones will be held on Thursday, November 9 from 11:00 am-11:20 am and 11:25 am-12:00 pm respectively.
  • The Kent Trinkle Education Lecturer, Dr. Marc Moon, will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 from 10:30 am – 10:50 am.
  • The Harold Urschel History Lectureship will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 from 2:30 pm-3:00 pm.
  • The STSA Business Meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 from 4:30pm – 5:15 pm.

Social Events

  • The All Attendee Luncheon will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 12:00pm, immediately following the Presidential Address.
  • The Residents Reception  will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm. All resident attendees are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to network with your peers and seasoned leaders in the field.
  • The always popular President’s Mixer will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm.
  • On Friday, Nov. 10, the Young Practitioners Luncheon and the Interdisciplinary Care Providers Luncheon will allow these attendees to network, hear from their peers, and discuss issues they face in their careers.
  • The popular Annual Awards Dinner will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 beginning with a reception at 7:00 pm followed by dinner, awards and entertainment at 8:00 pm.
  • Although the meeting will officially adjourn by 12:00 pm on Sat, Nov. 11, there’s still time to golf! Take advantage of the beautiful TPC course at the JW Marriott. Attendees can sign up for the STSA Golf Tournament at the time of registration. Don’t miss an opportunity to golf on a championship course designed by golf legends Greg Norman and Pete Dye.

  • Visit dozens of exhibitors in the STSA Exhibit Hall to learn about industry’s latest innovations.
  • Coffee breaks, continental breakfast, and dessert following the Thursday afternoon All-Attendee Luncheon will be served exclusively inside the Exhibit Hall.
