Active Membership

Active Membership is for cardiothoracic surgeons who currently reside, or have previously practiced cardiothoracic surgery for at least one year, or have completed a thoracic surgery or general surgery residency program, or have completed a thoracic or cardiovascular research or clinical fellowship for at least one consecutive year in the Southern region. Applicants for Active Membership must be certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Equivalent foreign training and certification may be acceptable following review by the Membership Committee and Council.

*New for 2021
Applicants interested in applying for STSA Active membership in 2021, who will not be ABTS-certified by the September 1 application deadline, are still welcome to apply. However, candidates who will not be ABTS-certified by September 1 must take the oral board exam being administered by ABTS on September 24-25, 2021 or November 13-14, 2021. In addition, applicants must meet all other STSA Active membership requirements, outside of ABTS certification, and must submit all required STSA membership application materials by September 1 to be considered. Acceptance of STSA Active membership is contingent upon the applicant passing their oral board exams. Applicants are required to submit their ABTS certificate number to STSA upon receipt.

Annual membership dues for Active Members are $350. New members pay a one-time $150 initiation fee. Members receive reduced Annual Meeting registration fees of $400 (compared to $600 for non-member physicians) and are required to attend one meeting within the first four years of their membership to confirm active status.

Review the STSA Bylaws or contact STSA Headquarters at stsa@stsa.org or 312.202.5892 for more information about Active Membership and to confirm if this is the right membership category for you.
