Diversity Scholarship
The purpose of the STSA Diversity Scholarship is to provide the opportunity for a medical student or a general surgery resident training in the United States, from an underrepresented group in cardiothoracic surgery, to attend the STSA 71st Annual Meeting, taking place November 7-10, 2024 in Austin, Texas.
Scholarship recipients will receive:
- Complimentary registration to attend the STSA 71st Annual Meeting at the Lost Pines Resort, in Austin, Texas, November 7-10, 2024;
- A three-night hotel stay at the Lost Pines Resort;
- Round-trip coach-class airfare to the Annual Meeting;
- Tickets to the President’s Mixer and Dinner Gala, where they will be recognized; and
- An assigned STSA mentor to assist in planning a schedule of educational programming, answer questions, and facilitate introductions.
To be eligible for this award, candidates must meet all three of the following criteria:
- Candidate must currently be a medical student; or a clinical PGY1, PGY2, or PGY3 general surgery resident; or a general surgery resident on dedicated research time who has not started their PGY4 clinical year.
- The institution where the candidate is training must be in the United States.
- The candidate must be from an underrepresented group in cardiothoracic surgery. Underrepresented groups include Women, LGBTQIA+, Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians/Asians/Pacific Islanders-Samoans.
Previous recipients of the following scholarships are ineligible to apply:
- AATS Member for a Day Program to attend AATS Annual Meeting
- AATS Summer Intern Scholarship
- STS Looking to the Future Scholarship to attend STS Annual Meeting
- STSA Brooks Scholarship to attend STSA Annual Meeting
- WTS Carpenter Scholarship to attend STSA Annual meeting
- WTS Scholarship Program to attend STS Annual Meeting
- WTS Thistlethwaite Scholarship to attend WTSA Annual Meeting
Please note: previous STSA Diversity Scholarship recipients are not eligible to reapply; however, previous applicants are encourage to reapply as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
