The presentation will also explain how current payment is calculated in the specialty; the importance of blocking the “0-day global” measures planned for implementation by CMS in 2016; and how surgeons can further document and define care activities in CT Surgery with an emphasis on improvement of clinical outcomes in the expanding environment of value-based purchasing.

Recent studies and reviews of available data show that family members remaining present during patient resuscitation is safe, and that families benefit. However, there are also reasons to object to the practice, and many physicians do not currently allow family members to remain present during resuscitations. The Ethics Debate will explore this topic in a pro/con format. The debate has been designed to heighten attendee awareness of an important ethical issue in a way that prompts attendees to examine their own practice and behavior.

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss reasons why allowing family members to remain in the room during resuscitations is a good idea;
  • Describe objections to the practice of allowing family members to remain in the room during resuscitations; and
  • Recommend a policy to deal with this issue to their hospital administrations and medical staffs.
