New This Year – Video Presentations in the Exhibit Hall

As noted in the Advance Program, we are pleased to announce that due to the overwhelming number of video abstract submissions received for the STSA 65th Annual Meeting, four additional video presentations will be presented in the Exhibit Hall during specified break times. The meeting will take place November 7-10, 2018 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Amelia Island, FL.

Robert Bartlett, MD presented the talk “ECMO: Past, Present and Future” at STSA 2015 on Nov. 5, 2015 in Orlando, FL.

Robert Bartlett, MD, Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan, presented an informative talk on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during the STSA 62nd Annual Meeting in Orlando on November 5, 2015.

Dr. Bartlett’s 2015 Postgraduate Program talk was one of the highest rated presentations of the entire STSA 62nd Annual Meeting. Meeting attendees provided the following comments on their meeting evaluations:

Tirone E. David, MD presented the Special Session invited talk during the STSA 62nd Annual Meeting Postgraduate Program on November 5, 2015 at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Dr. David’s presentation, titled “Lifelong Observations on Heart Valve Surgery,” discusses the functional anatomy of heart valves and their role in surgical treatment, comparative results of various devices used for heart surgery, and repair versus replacement for the treatment of heart valve disease. He also draws upon his more than 30 years of clinical practice and experience to examine operative mortality, morbidity, and long-term outcomes, as well as procedures that improve patients’ survival and functional recovery.

The STSA 63rd Annual Meeting Postgraduate Program will take place on Thursday, November 10, 2016 in Naples, FL at the Naples Grande Beach Resort. STSA partnered with CTSNet to create and share select video presentations from the STSA 61st Annual Meeting with the CT surgery community online. The 61st Annual Meeting took place November 5-8, 2014 in Tucson, AZ.

Video of Dr. David M. Shahian’s November 7, 2014 President’s Invited Lecture is now available. In this talk — titled Codman’s Legacy: Data, Reporting, and Professional Responsibility — Dr. Shahian discusses Ernest Codman’s vision of enhancing quality in health care, noting that 100 years later some of Dr. Codman’s key principles still remain strongly relevant.

Dr. Shahian currently serves as Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Vice President of the Massachusetts General Center for Quality and Safety, and Associate Director of the Codman Center. Videos Posted: Aspects of Lung Cancer Screening

STSA partnered with CTSNet to create and share select video presentations from the STSA 61st Annual Meeting with the CT surgery community online. The 61st Annual Meeting took place November 5-8, 2014 in Tucson, AZ.

Video of the November 6, 2014 Postgraduate Program expert talks on lung cancer screening at academic and non-academic institutions is now available. In these videos, two experts address lung cancer screening. Richard Freeman, MD of St. Vincent’s Health and Hospital System/Indiana Heart Institute, Indiana, discusses the rationale and best practices for lung cancer screening. John Howington, MD of Northshore University HealthSystem, Illinois, discusses the management of pulmonary nodules.

The presentations’ learning objectives include:

  • Comprehend the scientific foundation of CT screening for lung cancer.
  • Identify the currently accepted patient selection criteria for CT lung cancer screening.
  • Have a working knowledge of evidence-based follow-up for patients undergoing CT screening found to have an abnormality.
