Featured Speakers at the STSA 66th Annual Meeting

STSA is excited to host a wonderful line of speakers, both guests and colleagues, at this year’s STSA 66th Annual Meeting at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort in Marco Island, FL on November 6-9, 2019.

This year’s meeting will feature the following speakers:

  • President’s Invited Lecturer – Decision Making in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery…The Rational or Irrational Basis for Why We Do What We Do, by James A. Quintessenza, MD. Dr. Quintessenza is currently a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and a Professor of Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UK HealthCare Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Dr. Quintessenza will focus on the rationale for decision making in cardiothoracic surgery at multiple levels, both personally and professionally.
  • President’s Invited Keynote – Why BE a Cardiothoracic Surgeon…Nice Work if You Can Get It; A Life of Privilege, by Martin J. Elliott, MD. Dr. Elliott is currently the Professor of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at University College London and the Director of the National Service for Severe Tracheal Disease in Children based at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in the United Kingdom. Dr. Elliott will focus on his life as a cardiothoracic surgeon and share a look behind why he decided to pursue a career in cardiothoracic surgery.

On Friday morning, STSA will feature a special plenary session titled: DIVERSITY, HISTORY, and ADVOCACY.

  • DIVERSITY: Kent Trinkle LectureshipRobert S.D. Higgins, MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will present the Kent Trinkle Lectureship titled Education and Diversity in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Higgins will describe methods and strategies to ensure diversity among a cardiothoracic surgical workforce.
  • HISTORY: Constantine Mavroudis, MD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will present a comprehensive story on the history of medical illustration through the ages with his talk titled Medical Illustration in the Era of Cardiac Surgery.
  • ADVOCACY: Keith S. Naunheim, MD from St. Louis University, and John E. Mayer, MD from Boston Children’s Hospital will present the talk titled: Why Professionalism Advocacy is Important to Me. They will focus on the importance of professional advocacy and how it serves as a critical component of professionalism for cardiothoracic surgeons.

New this year, STSA will feature scientific e-posters in the meeting space foyer! E-posters will be on display in the meeting space foyer during the course of the meeting on both Thursday and Friday. Although CME will not be offered in conjunction with these posters, it’s an opportunity to engage with fellow surgeons in an informal, social environment.

STSA 66th Annual Meeting
